On the right: Ice cream sandwich tower assembled with waffles, vanilla bean ice cream, smokey cherry compote and amaretto cream.

We also had special blends of tea and coffee. They’re open late, and also serve food. Beautiful textures, squares and materials in the decor surround you too.

It’s a creole-style breakfast and lunch place, with just a very few locations in Colorado. All their breakfasts are delicious. This morning I had Eggs Eisenhower: bacon, eggs, potatoes, and a biscuit with the fabulous strawberry rhubarb jam. And three cups of the hot spice tea. Yum. Since it was my birthday, my breakfast was served on the special birthday plate. And as my favorite server Jen said, there’s only one plate, so you have to be lucky (or first) to get the birthday plate.

I asked where such a beautiful shimmering cake could come from, and then I heard about the Denver Cake Nazi (a la Seinfeld’s “soup nazi”). If you are interested in a one-of-a-kind, rare, special, cake like this one, you must know: He only selectively calls people back, you have to “know somebody”. He doesn’t take cake requests, he tells you what kind of cake you’ll get. You must pay cash. And finally, be ready to meet in a parking lot to receive the cake. (It’s probably best to keep this article hush-hush…)

Last week, Mango and I went to Lola with a friend of ours. Located in Platte River area, north Denver, Lola is a great spot for happy hour with a killer view of downtown. It felt especially decadent 10 minutes before 5pm on a warm, late fall thursday afternoon.

After the great company, the best part was the fresh guacamole: lightly mashed and still chunky avocado, liberal cilantro, sprinkle of coarse sea salt, and a lime wedge coated with cayenne.
