Will it work? (preserving ginger root in vodka)

I love ginger root, but sometimes even my usual method of prolonging it’s life expectancy by wrapping it in a paper towel and then putting it in a plastic bag doesn’t extend it’s viability long enough, and it gets gross.

Discussing this dilemma, my man said he’d heard somehow or another that putting it in vodka would keep it good to go for a while. I was skeptical, but was willing to try it.

So we tried it. And it works! The ginger isn’t quite as flavorful as it once was, but close and it tastes like ginger (not vodka). And it works great, even over a period of a few months.

Another good reason to have vodka on hand!

Note: I do recommend doing this with a glass container not plastic. Who knows what sort of weird chemical combination would result from vodka+plastic over long periods of time!

Those who know me, realize how much I rely on my beloved sigg mug to transport my beloved coffee to work on my bike each morning. It is indestructible (I’ve dropped it off the top of the car before), completely leak proof and keeps liquids warm… not just warm, hot…. for hours.

So imagine my despair when I left it at work one day! In an effort to replicate my sigg routine, I did this:

Did it work? Did the plastic wrap and packaging tape do it’s job? Well, not exactly…

When I pulled this banana off, I accidentally tore it open. Since I needed it to stay fresh until the next day (it was headed for my lunch box), I used packing tape to seal it up. Worked great!

Welcome to the first edition of… will it work?

the issue: I had a pitcher of homemade stock that I needed to filter.

what I tried: wrapping cheese cloth around the mouth of the pitcher, securing it with a rubber band.

did it work?: scroll down below the picture to find out.

(I know the suspense was killing you) yes, it worked. no spills, even!
