October 21st, 2009 · No Comments · Dessert
On a recent date night, we went to D Bar and enjoyed these desserts.
On the left: Trio of fresh (still warm!) home made brioche donuts, topped with their donut holes, all coated with cinnamon sugar. On the side are swirls of chocolate and caramel in a vanilla dipping sauce.
On the right: Ice cream sandwich tower [...]
Voodoo Doughnuts
June 8th, 2009 · No Comments · Breakfast, Dessert, Vegan
While in Portland Oregon, I was delighted to experience the world of Voodoo Doughnuts. (Mind you these are doughnuts, not donuts.) Huge, sweet, delicious fried doughy goodness in traditional flavors and crazy combinations… peanut butter chocolate, bubble yum, cap’n crunch, fruit loops, grape.
And it was hard to believe, but they had over a dozen VEGAN [...]

My wonderful man wanted to make a pie, so I encouraged him to use a can of boisenberries we had in our cupboard to make a fruit pie. It didn’t exactly go as planned. Here’s the story…
First off, he checked out the boisenberries can, and lo and behold there was a recipe on the label, [...]

The story of the “Denver Cake Nazi”
April 20th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Dessert, Food, Local
I went to a birthday party over the weekend and saw this marvel of cake making and decorating. Truly a work of edible art.
I asked where such a beautiful shimmering cake could come from, and then I heard about the Denver Cake Nazi (a la Seinfeld’s “soup nazi”). If you are interested in a one-of-a-kind, [...]

Just two of many incredible house made desserts at Pasquini’s.
Chocolate Espresso Torte (above), is a wedge of deliciously dense velvety chocolate with just a hint of espresso.
Classic Chocolate Cake (above) is moist and fluffy with a light and creamy frosting, not too sweet.

Melting Chocolate without a Double-Boiler
February 17th, 2009 · No Comments · Candy, Dessert, Tips
Many recipes call for chocolate melted in a double-boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler, what do you do? You could microwave it, but it’s kinda tricky to not burn the chocolate and get it to the right warmth for melting. Putting your chocolate chunks in a pot on direct stove top heat [...]

New dessert for non-dairy eaters
January 24th, 2009 · No Comments · Dairy-free, Dessert, Review
Let me outline a few things for you:
I love mint chocolate chip ice cream.
I can’t eat dairy products. (I am lactose-intolerant and allergic to casein — the milk protein.)
Soy ice creams are pretty tasty, but I try not to eat too much soy because it’s hard for me to digest.
Rice milk ice creams are okay, [...]

Swimming Bears (gummy bears in jello)
January 20th, 2009 · No Comments · Dessert, Food, Kids
This unique dessert was the brainchild of my partner. The ingredients are blue jello and gummi bears — hence (Gummy) Bears Swimming (in Jell0).
The result is super sweet sugary goodness. It was a fascinating experiment, the bears got all puffed up and bloated, and the whole thing jiggled when shaken (a bunch of Care Bears [...]

Cookie Exchange
December 20th, 2008 · No Comments · Dessert, Holiday
This year, we decided to host a cookie exchange. It was a smashing success! Here are some highlights:
There weren’t strict rules at this cookie exchange. Basically, if you brought cookies, you could select some other cookies (in about the same amount) to take home with you.
We gave out “awards” in five categories: picture-perfect, most ambitious, [...]
