Mango and Sticky Rice

"Mango and Stocky Rice"-- it is my last meal choice. And it can only come from one spot... Raku (a hip asian diner in D.C.) I want to marry: raspberry croissants at St Marks (Denver), NE clam chowder from Cosi (DC), couscous from the Panini Cafe (Irvine), corn and tomatoes from a real garden... I spend my free time: in my community garden spot tending to the experiments I plant there, at farmer's markets, grocery shopping on Saturdays, cooking new things and eating them... I dislike: when I don't eat "evenly" and run out of a side dish before I'm done with my main dish, hearing people eat cereal, spilling things in the oven...

Last Saturday, at the Cherry Creek Farmer’s Market, it was time. Corn dropped to 4/$1. To me, that means it’s the peak of the season and time to buy as much as I can carry home. When I was a kid, my dad and I would sit on lawn chairs in the back yard and [...]

  • eggplant experiment 8.26.08

Last night when I went to visit my plot at the Whittier Community Garden, I found that I had an eggplant ready. cool! Except, I’ve never cooked eggplant. Growing up on a farm in Ohio, we ate sweet corn and green beans. and tomatoes… not eggplant.
So I decided to get crazy. (I’m on the [...]

  • husband-is-away dinner #45 8.24.08

When he’s away I like to make dinners that he doesn’t care for. I say “doesn’t care for” because, really, he’ll eat anything I make. But fish is not high on his favorite foods list.
This is one of my favorites and is totally easy! I marinate the salmon in:
    • soy sauce
    • rice wine vinegar
    • garlic

If you have lots of eggs to get rid of, or if you just want to impress your friends, make this. I posted this on allrecipes.com after some research and lots of trial and error.
The batter should NOT be whipped as much as you would at lower altitudes.

The final product looks like this:

    Using cake flower [...]

I planted lettuce in my garden this year. I never realized how satisfying it could be. Now, instead of spending 6 dollars a bag at the farmer’s market, I am swimming in free, yummy, fresh lettuce.
romaine lettuce with mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, dried cranberries, cucumbers and feta cheese. rosemary sourdough bread and salami on the side. [...]

Eight years ago tonight, I met my husband in Washington DC. We ended up at at a wood-fired pizza joint with some friends. So in tribute, I made a pizza on our grill.

As a graphic designer, I take notice when I see signage that stands out. I especially love old signs and I thought this one was unique. My favorite part is the “Meat + Vegetables” tag line. It’s a good reminder of what we should be eating — real food, that is.
