Many recipes call for chocolate melted in a double-boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler, what do you do? You could microwave it, but it’s kinda tricky to not burn the chocolate and get it to the right warmth for melting. Putting your chocolate chunks in a pot on direct stove top heat [...]

What to do with extra egg yolks
February 16th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Dogs, Food
Recently, I made a flourless chocolate cake that called for egg whites. I set aside the yolks in the fridge and wondered what to do with them… Ultimately, I fried them up in the skillet after cooking a few strips of bacon for breakfast and made a yolk-omelet for our dog. I didn’t give her [...]

Valentine’s Day Dinner
February 15th, 2009 · No Comments · Dinner
Our main course:
grilled sirloin, topped with garlic herb butter, served medium rare
steamed broccoli (to balance out the richness of everything else)
redskin mashed potatoes with olive oil and parsley, topped with real smoked crumpled bacon
We enjoyed this with an inexpensive red wine from Cable Car — strong cherry flavor and a hint of black pepper.

Eat at your own risk.

This is a piece of art I purchased at an art exhibit a couple months back at Object+Thought Gallery in Denver, Colorado.
It’s a custom mold of a “fat kid”, made into a lollipop by artist Viviane Le Courtois.
I can’t decide whether or not to eat it. What do you think? Should I eat it?

February 9th, 2009 · No Comments · Dairy-free, Dinner, Food, Recipe
A few weekends every winter, we go on a hut trip or a winter getaway trip with some of our friends. We ski or snowshoe a couple of miles into a cabin up in the Rocky Mountains heated only by a wood stove, with no running water or electricity (and yes, an outhouse) and we [...]

Will it work? (dairy-free naan without a clay oven or stone)
February 6th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Bread, Dairy-free, Food
To go with an Indian-style dinner, my man decided he’d try to make some naan. Since it was for me too, he wanted to make it dairy free. We don’t have a clay stone, and with the substitutions we weren’t sure how it would turn out. Here’s the story:
Since we didn’t have clay stone (or [...]

A lovely landscape of frosting splotches on a cookie sheet. The cookie sheet is submerged under water and the frosting drips have partially “melted” away.

Quick & Easy Dairy-free Dinner: Gnocchi and Mini-Meatballs
February 3rd, 2009 · 1 Comment · Dairy-free, Dinner, Quick & Easy Dairy Free Dinner, Recipe
This looks like a laborious fancy meal, but it’s really quick. The secret is you’re not really making complex “meatballs”, you’re really making meat “chunks”. And of course, gnocchi is a little more unusual potato-based delicate pasta that tastes delicious.
Ingredients:
1 lb gnocchi (check to make sure it’s dairy-free. some are, some aren’t)
1/2 lb ground meat [...]

Weird Food: Buddha’s Hand
February 1st, 2009 · No Comments · Food, Fruit, Weird Food
Part of the series of weird food, this citrus fruit was found at Whole Foods:
It looks somewhat out of place next to the grapefruits, oranges and pears! Supposedly, Buddha’s Hand is one of the oldest citrus fruits from Asia, this fruit is used only for the zest and it’s strong fragrant aroma — and there [...]
