You should check them out. Although I would pick up the phone rather then email b/c they aren't good with email but will always call you back (except in the busy season.) I agree that CSAs have difficulties, and are certainly not as convenient as grocery stores. However, they definitely have some upsides, as you outline. I would encourage anyone I know to sign up for a CSA (more info here: http://www.vsc.org/0304-CSA.htm ), but, as bacon mentions, joining one close to you is paramount.
